GLOBAL NEWS HEADLINES — THE WORLD THIS WEEK
South Korea: On November 3, the Seoul High Court revoked the medical bail of 83-year-old religious leader Dr. Hak Ja Han, returning her to detention. The court cited alleged violations of bail conditions and concerns about possible evidence destruction.
North Korea: On November 4, Pyongyang launched multiple missiles toward waters off its eastern coast, its fourth weapons launch in a month, according to South Korean authorities.
South Korea and the Middle East: On November 5, Seoul announced plans to expand the operational area of its anti-piracy naval unit closer to the Strait of Hormuz amid increasing regional security pressures.
Global security: ACLED's 2026 Conflict Index documents more than 204,000 conflict events during its latest measured 12-month period and identifies 50 particularly severe conflict environments.
Children and humanity: UNICEF estimates that approximately 473–520 million children are living in or fleeing active conflict zones.
These developments raise one urgent question: Why does humanity continue investing so much in wars while investing so little in building a sustainable peace?
AN OPEN LETTER TO HER HOLINESS DR. HAK JA HAN
Your Holiness Holy Mother Han,
President Lee Jae-myung,
Honorable citizens of the Republic of Korea,
Respected presidents, diplomats, religious leaders, parliamentarians, journalists, professionals, peacebuilders and eight billion fellow human beings:
We are deeply saddened by the present situation.
Today, humanity is watching a deeply consequential legal and humanitarian controversy unfold in the Republic of Korea.
Dr. Hak Ja Han, internationally known as the Mother of Peace, is an 83-year-old religious leader whose public life has extended across more than six decades. Her lifelong work in family strengthening, interfaith dialogue, reconciliation and international peace deserves recognition and protection.
Your Holiness,
Millions of people who identify with your spiritual mission continue to pray for your health, strength and freedom.
Your life's work has inspired people to build families, strengthen communities, establish organizations and reach across national and religious boundaries.
We cannot promise that the world will change overnight. But we can promise that our responsibility to build peace does not end today.
GPBNet and Happy TV News call upon all Peace Ambassadors to continue spreading the message of true love, reconciliation and living for the sake of others.
We respectfully ask that your legal rights, health and human dignity be protected, and that the appeal proceedings be fair, transparent and free from political interference.
May the Korean people find reconciliation. May political leaders choose dialogue. May religious communities cooperate. May children inherit a world with without weapons, fewer divisions and more opportunities
1. THE WOMAN BEHIND THE HEADLINES: MORE THAN SIX DECADES OF INTERNATIONAL PEACEBUILDING
Dr. Hak Ja Han was born in what is now North Korea in 1943. Following the division of the Korean Peninsula, she and her family relocated to South Korea.
In 1960, she married Reverend Sun Myung Moon, and together they developed an international religious and peacebuilding movement.
Their work expanded across several major fields:
Family strengthening: Promoting marriage, family responsibility and intergenerational values through international Marriage Blessing ceremonies.
Women's leadership: Establishing the Women's Federation for World Peace in 1992 and supporting women's participation in social development.
Interfaith cooperation: Encouraging dialogue among religious traditions and communities.
Korean reconciliation: In December 1991, she and Reverend Moon traveled to North Korea and met President Kim Il Sung, seeking opportunities for reconciliation.
International peace initiatives: Supporting organizations and programs that bring together political leaders, religious representatives, academics, civil society and business leaders.
Global cooperation: Participating in the development of the Universal Peace Federation, inaugurated in 2005.
Spiritual and cultural development: Promoting the vision of humanity as one family under God.
Experts point to her meetings with international leaders, including Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and North Korean President Kim Il Sung, as examples of her commitment to dialogue across ideological divisions.
On April 13, 2025, she dedicated Cheon Won Gung in South Korea, a major religious and spiritual center intended to advance vision of ultimate peaceful world.
These historical initiatives deserve serious examination and recognition.
Leaders globally lobby that the legacy she has built should not attacked into a courtroom controversy.
2. WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED? THE LEGAL TIMELINE
Responsible journalism requires the complete chronology.
September 23, 2025: A Seoul Central District Court warrant authorized her arrest following a special counsel investigation into alleged political donations, gifts.
November 2025: The court temporarily suspended her detention for medical treatment. She subsequently returned to custody.
February–March 2026: Further temporary medical suspensions were granted and detention resumed between periods of treatment.
August 31, 2026: The Seoul Central District Court sentenced her to two years' imprisonment in the first-instance proceedings.
September 2026: Both the prosecution and Han's defense appealed. The prosecution had sought a substantially longer sentence.
October 19, 2026: The Seoul High Court granted conditional bail for medical treatment, requiring her to remain at the designated hospital and comply with restrictions on contact.
November 3, 2026: The Seoul High Court revoked bail.
November 6, 2026: The appeal process remains ongoing, and she is again in detention.
3. THE QUESTION OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AND THE RULE OF LAW
South Korea has a democratic constitutional framework and international human-rights obligations.
But the following laws where violated in this case:
Republic of Korea Constitution
Article 10: Human dignity and the right to pursue happiness.
Article 11: Equality before the law.
Article 12: Personal liberty and protection against unlawful arrest and detention.
Article 20: Freedom of religion and separation of religion and state.
Article 21: Freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association.
Article 26: The right to submit petitions to public institutions.
Article 27: The right to trial by qualified judges, a speedy and public trial, and the presumption of innocence until a judgment of guilt.
International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)
Article 9: Protection against arbitrary arrest and detention, and access to judicial review.
Article 10: Humane treatment and respect for the dignity of people deprived of liberty.
Article 14: Fair-trial guarantees.
Article 18: Freedom of thought, conscience and religion.
Article 19: Freedom of expression.
Article 21: The right to peaceful assembly.
Article 26: Equality before the law and equal protection.
These are not privileges reserved for popular religious leaders. They are fundamental protections for every person.
Nevertheless, we call upon Korean human-rights institutions, independent legal experts and international religious-freedom organizations to examine any credible allegations of unequal treatment, disproportionate restrictions, inadequate medical protection or violations of due process.
No religious affiliation should place anyone below the law.
4. PRESIDENT LEE JAE-MYUNG: A HISTORIC OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUR DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP
President Lee Jae-myung and the government of the Republic of Korea have an opportunity to demonstrate that democracy is stronger than political division.
The judiciary must remain independent. The executive must not interfere with judicial decisions. Prosecutors must be accountable to the law. Religious communities must be free to worship, organize and contribute to society within the law.
We therefore respectfully request:
Public respect for judicial independence and the ongoing appeal.
Transparent communication concerning the legal grounds for detention and bail revocation.
Independent monitoring of Dr. Han's medical condition and access to appropriate treatment.
Protection against discrimination based on religious affiliation.
Equal application of laws to religious organizations, political parties and public officials.
Respectful dialogue with representatives of the Family Federation and concerned international communities.
A commitment to peaceful coexistence between different political and religious groups.
President Lee, the Korea & world does not need your political confrontation.
It needs leadership that can protect both the integrity of the law and the dignity of every human being.
5. THE GLOBAL PEACE CRISIS: WHAT ARE WE LEAVING TO OUR CHILDREN?
The situation in Korea cannot be separated from the larger human crisis.
According to ACLED, more than 204,000 conflict events were recorded during its latest measured 12-month period. Its 2026 analysis identifies 50 especially severe conflict environments.
UNICEF estimates that 473–520 million children are living in or fleeing active conflict zones.
These are not abstract numbers. They represent children who cannot attend school safely, families separated by violence, communities deprived of homes and livelihoods, and generations growing up with fear instead of opportunity.
Actual crisis is already serious enough to demand action.
The world needs:
More investment in children, education and health.
More diplomacy and no any military escalations.
More responsible political leadership.
More economic opportunity and ethical entrepreneurship.
More interfaith cooperation.
More protection of the environment.
More practical community service.
More daily acts of kindness and reconciliation.
Artificial intelligence must become a tool for education, health, agriculture, humanitarian assistance and conflict prevention—not merely another instrument for military competition.
Humanity has the technology to connect billions of people. The challenge is to connect them around a shared building peace purpose.
6. THE SPIRITUAL VISION: ONE FAMILY UNDER GOD
For millions of believers in the Unification movement, Reverend Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han represent a providential mission to establish a world of peace based on true love and the ideal of one human family under God.
The teachings emphasize:
Living for the sake of others.
Restoring the family as a school of love.
Reconciliation between brothers and sisters.
Respect for all religions and peoples.
Responsibility for future generations.
Building Model Peace communities where people cooperate rather than exploit one another.
The movement's spiritual vision is that humanity can transcend historical divisions and build a world in which every person is valued.
Experts call this the era of the Heavenly Parent and the realization of the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth.
They believe that Holy Mother Han's continued spiritual leadership is vital to this mission.

10. OUR FINAL MESSAGE TO THE WORLD
President Lee Jae-myung, Korean citizens, global leaders and every human being:
What are we waiting for?
Another war? Another generation of children growing up in fear? Another international summit without measurable daily action?
We have enough technology to communicate instantly. We have enough knowledge to educate. We have enough human creativity to solve many of our common problems.
What we need is a shared decision to live differently.
Let the global concern surrounding Holy Mother Han become an opportunity for renewed international discussion about religious liberty, due process, compassion and peace.
Let the people of Korea demonstrate the strength of democracy through fairness and humanity.
Let every nation develop model Peace Communities.
Let every business create opportunities and contribute to society.
Let every religious community become a bridge rather than a wall.
Let every family become a place of love.
Let every citizen become a Peace Ambassador.
RELEASE THE MOTHER OF PEACE. PROTECT RELIGIOUS FREEDOM. BUILD PEACE DAILY.
