Press Release: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Open Letter to President Lee Jae-myung, Republic of Korea

To His Excellency, President Lee Jae-myung,

The Republic of Korea stands at a crossroads. Once hailed as a beacon of democracy and religious freedom in East Asia, it now finds itself under scrutiny for what many are calling a systematic campaign of spiritual suppression and political persecution.

From Journalistic investigations, since your inauguration in June 2025,

instead of helping Korean people, your administration is busy just with persecutions.

It has launched a series of aggressive investigations and raids targeting religious organizations—particularly those with conservative, pro-American, or anti-communist leanings. These actions have sparked outrage across the globe and raised urgent questions about Korea’s commitment to democratic values.

On September 23, 2025, Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, the 83-year-old co-founder of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU), was arrested and interrogated for ten hours despite recovering from heart surgery. She remains imprisoned at the Seoul Detention Center, accused of embezzlement and political fund violations—charges widely viewed as politically motivated.

This is not an isolated case. The July 18 raid on the Unification Church, the storming of Yoido Full Gospel Church, and the ongoing persecution of Pastor Jun Kwang-hoon reflect a coordinated effort to dismantle Korea’s religious infrastructure. Proposals circulating within your administration to adopt “cult dissolution” laws—modeled after controversial French and Japanese statutes—threaten to criminalize faith itself.

📉 A Presidency of Retrenchment, Not Renewal

Your administration’s pivot away from humanitarian aid has further alienated Korea from the global community. Investigations into the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and plans to slash the $4.8 billion aid budget spending mark a stark departure from Korea’s legacy as a development leader. This shift undermines Seoul’s credibility in the Global South and jeopardizes decades of goodwill.

🌐 The Unification Church: A Legacy of Global Service

Since its founding in 1954, the Family Federation has championed peace, education, and interfaith cooperation. Under the leadership of Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, the movement has:

  • Established universities, schools, and hospitals across Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America.

  • Launched daily volunteer programs in over 150 countries, including disaster relief, food distribution, and youth mentorship.

  • Hosted interfaith summits at the United Nations, the Kremlin, and the U.S. Capitol, promoting dialogue between Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, and Hindus.

  • Built peace bridges between North and South Korea through cultural exchanges and humanitarian aid.

Even today, while Dr. Han is unjustly detained, Family Federation volunteers continue to serve in refugee camps, orphanages, and inner cities—from Nairobi to New Delhi, from São Paulo to Seoul.

🗣 Global Outcry

World leaders have condemned your administration’s actions:

  • President Donald Trump: “WHAT IS GOING ON IN SOUTH KOREA? Seems like a Purge or Revolution. We can’t have that and do business there”.

  • Mike Pompeo, former U.S. Secretary of State: “Deeply troubling… a betrayal of democratic principles.”

  • Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House: “Suffocating political and religious suppression.”

Even your former civil affairs chief, Oh Kwang-soo, has joined Dr. Han’s legal team—an extraordinary move that signals deep concern within your own ranks.

✊ A Call to Conscience

President Lee, you were elected to serve the Korean people—not to silence them. The imprisonment of Dr. Han, the erosion of religious freedom, and the rollback of humanitarian aid betray the very ideals Korea once stood for.

Today, thousands rally in Seoul. Millions pray worldwide. The internet records every act. Every injustice will be remembered. But so too will every act of courage.

You have the power to change course.

  • Release Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon.

  • Restore Korea’s spiritual dignity.

  • Reclaim your legacy as a leader of peace, not persecution.

Will you be remembered as the president who silenced Korea’s prophets—or the one who set them free?

The world awaits your answer.
